Rockwood's "Image" was RUINED by light rail
From the DJC online: "MAX improvements could help improve Rockwood's image".
"Some hope that these improvements will finally jump-start development at a former Fred Meyer site across from the MAX station. The city purchased the site in 2005, and has since created a public art plaza, Plaza del Sol, at the site of the area’s future town center. But no private development has occurred there yet.Obviously, Tri-Met lives in backwards world.
“The idea with this project is to leverage investment in transit into nearby development opportunities,” said Mary Fetsch, a TriMet spokeswoman. “By making the transit area safer and more visible, it will lend a sense of place to the whole area.”

90 Years Ago: "Mechanized Banking" Comes To Gresham
In the Dec. 31 Outlook, Sharon Nesbit shares this tidbit published in the Outlook 90 years ago:
"Gresham’s First State Bank announced 90 years ago that its accounting system had been revolutionized by an electrically powered bookkeeping machine, “which adds, subtracts, multiplies and divides. The wonder machine also kept duplicate accounts and could tell you when you were overdrawn.“The machine performs almost unbelievable tasks,” wrote The Gresham Outlook reporter".

Girls HS X-Country: Centennial's Dettmann Sisters On A Roll
Centennial High School Cross Country runners Michelle and Andrea Dettmann dominated the rest of the pack in the September 26 MHC/PIL League Meet 5000 meter race. Michelle Dettmann, a senior, won with a time of 18:58:00. Her sister Andrea Dettmann, a freshman, came in second place at 20:31:08. The next finisher, Beaverton junior Jamie Waymire, came in third at 20:43:14.
Michelle has won her last three races. Her sister Andrea has improved with time, placing 9th, 7th, and 2nd in her last three races.
I have a more than a little interest in these two. They're nieces of my Mrs! So good luck, Andrea and Michelle! Feel the need for speed! Turn and burn! Go Centennial!

New Gresham City Councilor To Be Picked Tomorrow
Gresham city councilors will interview seven potential new city council candidates, then vote to appoint and swear in the new councilor on Tuesday, Aug. 21. That's a lot of interest for a volunteer job. But it's good to see so many folks in Gresham who want to invest in their community.
"Council hopefuls who filed applications for Position 1 by the Wednesday, Aug. 15, deadline include David Widmark, Jenni Simonis, Tom Giusto, Michael McCormick, Darren Hippenstiel, John Kilian and Jason Ogan." Click here to read the entire article at the Gresham Outlook.

Swamped Is As Swamped Does
Thanks goodness Tuesday night's city council meeting will be the last one until August 28. Because I've been swamped with work related, well, work! No time to blog. But just for fun, I'll do a free flow, whatever pops into my mind blog entry now. And here we go.
The Oregon House Republicans seem to be in disarray. Karen Minnis, not running for re-election. Wayne Scott, not running for re-election. With the Democrat barbarians at the gate, so to speak, this doesn't look good for Oregonians. Coyote over at NW Republican covers the disastrous Democrat dominated 2007 Oregon Legislature, which can give us an idea what we're in for during the next session.
Over in Gresham, there's an open city council seat. The Gresham Outlook covers the story here.
According to the Outlook, there are four Greshamites who have expressed interest:
-John Kilian, a Troutdale dentist and Gresham resident
-David Widmark, a former Gresham planning commissioner, city councilor and Mt. Hood Community College board member.
-Tom Giusto, a local real estate broker.
-Jenni Simonis, a local web site designer and lefty activist. Simonis, being a web site designer, has her campaign site up and running at www.jennisimonis.com. At that site, Simonis writes, "Currently, the majority of our city council members live in the same area of town -- almost all of them in the same precinct (the central portion of the city south of Division). In a city like Gresham, it is very important that we have geographical diversity on our council. Each neighborhood within the city is different than the others -- the sourther areas in the buttes are quite unlike the NW neighborhoods in Rockwood or the NE neighborhoods near the college and hospital. Traffic issues, crime, neighborhood complaints, etc. all vary from neighborhood to neighborhood, and it is important that we account for this on our council."
Meanwhile, over at moonbat lefty site Loaded Orygun, Simonis wrote, "Since it is a non-partisan position, I tried to keep my partisan politics out of the explanation of my involvement in the community as much as possible."
What a concept! City councils that are nonpartisan. That's a hoot! That thought made me laugh! So, to finish up this meandering blog entry, enjoy some classic Rodney Dangerfield. Enjoy the rest of your week!

Injured K-9 Dog Koda Now Has A Myspace Page
Gresham's K-9 dog, Koda, now has his own myspace page. As you may recall, Koda is recovering from severe front leg injuries after he plunged over a steep hillside with a wanted suspect. Read the Gresham Outlook story about Koda here.

Troutdale Home Appreciation Rate: 16.3%
Troutdale and Gresham had the highest appreciation rates for the last 12 months, according to RMLS and the Portland, Oregon Real Estate Blog. Appreciation percents are based on a comparison of average price for the last 12 months with 12 months before.
Here are the current appreciation rates for the region:

OOPS! Wood Village Fred Meyer 12,000SF Too Big
Ever add 12,000 square feet to your new building when no one's looking? It looks like Fred Meyer's Wood Village store, built in the late 1990's, got away with it.
According to the Gresham Outlook, Wood Village city staff didn't notice the increased square footage until this year, when they began studying a land use application for a Goodyear Tire store.
From the Outlook article: "At 148,707 square feet, the grocery store is nearly 12,000 feet larger than the original application submitted in the late 1990's, which called for a 137,000 square-foot structure."
